There wasn't some grand business plan behind the creation of AyeInspect. There was a roof, a drone, a computer, and me getting increasingly fed up.
As a drone roof surveyor myself, I knew how useful drones could be for inspecting roofs. They allow you to get a close look at areas that can be difficult, dangerous or expensive to access without ladders, scaffolding or someone physically walking across a roof.
The actual drone roof survey was never the part that bothered me. It was everything that came afterwards.
The problem with producing roof inspection reports
Once the drone was back on the ground, the real slog began. Images had to be sorted through. Findings had to be identified and documented. Photographs needed annotations. Reports had to be formatted and checked.
And for many small businesses carrying out roof inspections, the tools available meant relying on generic templates in Microsoft Office or similar software. It worked. But 'it works' isn't necessarily the same as 'this is a professional solution'.
I was spending far too much time doing repetitive administrative work that had very little to do with actually inspecting a roof. So, naturally, I started looking for something better.
The roof inspection software was already out there... sort of
I found some genuinely excellent inspection software. And I'll say that openly because the companies behind these platforms have good reason to charge what they do. Building and maintaining proper inspection software isn't cheap, and many of these products are incredibly capable.
The issue was that they were often designed to do everything. And that's fantastic if you're a large company carrying out multiple types of inspections and surveys. But my business was about roofs.
I didn't need hundreds of features designed for completely different industries. I needed software that understood what a roof inspection actually involves and helped me produce a professional report without turning the process into an administrative marathon.
The price was another consideration. The investment required by some of the existing platforms can make perfect sense for a national company with a large team and multiple disciplines. For a small, family-run business, it's a very different proposition.
I kept thinking: surely there is a better option for people like us? That's where AyeInspect began.
Why AyeInspect is different
The idea behind AyeInspect is actually quite simple. Focus on roof inspections and do them properly.
Rather than building an enormous software suite and adding every feature imaginable, we wanted to concentrate on what actually matters when inspecting a roof: professional drone imagery, clear identification of potential defects, useful reporting, a straightforward experience, and technology that helps reduce the boring parts of the job rather than creating another layer of administration.
We're interested in making roof inspections easier and more professional, not winning an award for having the longest feature list.
But AyeInspect isn't just software
As the idea developed, AyeInspect became much more than the solution to my own reporting headaches. It became a way of providing professional drone roof inspections to homeowners across Central Scotland, while also giving trade and property businesses the software to offer the same service to their own customers.
Our homeowner inspections cover Central Scotland, with AyeInspect operating across areas including Glasgow, Lanarkshire, Edinburgh, Stirling, Falkirk and Paisley.
For homeowners, a drone roof survey can provide detailed photographic evidence of the condition of a roof without the need for someone to climb onto it. That can be particularly useful when buying a property, investigating suspected damage, carrying out maintenance planning or simply trying to understand what is happening above your head. Because let's face it, most of us don't spend much time looking at our roofs until something goes wrong.
Built for the trades too
One of the things I'm particularly proud of is our trade service. AyeInspect now works with trade and property businesses across the UK, providing the software that powers their own white-label drone roof inspection services.
That means a roofing company, surveyor, property professional or another suitable business can carry out professional drone roof surveys for their own customers using their own drone and their own team. The inspection, reporting and customer experience remains theirs because it's white labelled, and our software sits behind the scenes.
We essentially provide the backend software that makes it possible. For a small roofing company, that can mean being able to offer a professional drone roof inspection service without suddenly having to become a software developer all at once. That's the sort of thing AyeInspect was built for.

AyeInspect might now be working with businesses across the UK, but our roots are firmly in Airdrie. This is where I started the business. It's where the original frustration with endless report templates began, and it's still where AyeInspect is run from today.
We're proud to be a small, independent Scottish business. There is something quite satisfying about starting with a problem you personally have, building a solution for it, and then seeing that solution become useful to other people doing the same kind of work. That's still what drives AyeInspect.
We're not trying to be everything to everyone
There are plenty of companies offering huge inspection platforms with an enormous range of features. Some of them are brilliant. But AyeInspect doesn't need to compete by becoming bigger. We'd rather become better at what we actually do.
Roof inspections. That's our focus. Whether it's helping a homeowner in Lanarkshire understand the condition of their roof, helping someone buying a property in Glasgow make a more informed decision, or powering white-label drone roof inspection reports for a roofing company hundreds of miles away, the principle is the same.
Use technology where it genuinely helps. Keep things simple where they don't need to be complicated. And produce something that is actually useful to the person receiving it.
So, why did I start AyeInspect?
Honestly? Because I was tired of doing things the long way. I knew drones could make roof inspections safer and more efficient. I knew technology could make the reporting process better. And I knew there were plenty of small businesses that would benefit from professional roof inspection software without needing to spend a fortune on building their own system or hiring additional staff.
So I decided to build something I would have wanted to use myself. AyeInspect started with one drone roof surveyor in Airdrie who thought there had to be a better way.
We're still based here. We're still independently run. And we're still concentrating on roofs. Just with considerably less time spent fighting with Word templates. And, thankfully, a lot more time spent doing what we actually enjoy.
