After a storm

Roof leaking after a storm? Here's what to do — and how to see the damage safely

West of Scotland wind and rain find every weak slate and flashing. Once it is safe to fly, our drone photographs your roof from above and circles anything visible that has moved, cracked or lifted — dated evidence for you, your insurer and any roofer. Fixed £99 for homes.

First steps when the roof starts leaking

  1. 1

    Stay safe

Never go onto the roof or up a ladder in wind or rain. Keep clear of anything that could fall, and call 999 if the structure looks unsafe.

  2. 2

    Contain the water

Buckets and towels under drips, move belongings, and switch off electrics near any water if it is safe to do so.

  3. 3

    Photograph what you can see

Take dated photos of ceiling stains, debris in the garden and anything visible from the ground. Insurers usually want early evidence.

  4. 4

    Tell your insurer

Report it promptly. Emergency covering is a roofer's job — we do not carry out repairs.

  5. 5

    Get the roof photographed

Once the weather allows safe flying, a drone check shows what moved up there, so you and any roofer are working from the same facts.

Our check is external and visual only. We cannot see under slates or inside the roof space, and we cannot guarantee there are no hidden defects.

What storms usually disturb

Slipped and missing slates

Wind lifts older slates and nail fixings give way, often near ridges and verges.

Ridge and hip tiles

Weak mortar lets ridge tiles rock loose or blow off entirely.

Chimney flashings

Lead and mortar around chimney stacks are a very common entry point for driven rain.

Valleys and gutters

Debris blocks valleys and gutters, so heavy rain overflows into the building.

Flat roof membranes

Felt and membranes can lift at edges and seams in strong gusts.

Tenement chimney heads

Tall stacks on older buildings take the full force of the wind.

Storm and leak questions

Can you find exactly where my roof is leaking?

We photograph the outside of the roof and point out visible likely causes, such as slipped slates, lifted flashing or blocked gutters. Water can travel before it shows on a ceiling, so we cannot always confirm the exact entry point.

How soon can you come out after a storm?

We fly as soon as wind and rain are safe for the drone, which is often a day or two after the worst weather. Busy periods after a named storm can affect availability — book and we will confirm a date.

Will your report get my insurance claim approved?

No one can promise that. The report gives dated, annotated photos you can include with a claim, but the decision is always your insurer's.

What does a storm roof check cost?

Homes are a fixed £99 with the annotated report included. Commercial premises are £149.

Do you do emergency repairs?

No. We are independent and do not repair roofs or recommend particular contractors. That is why the report is impartial.
