Blocked gutters in a Scottish autumn: the roof damage starts above the downpipe

Leaves are only part of the problem. Moss, broken slate and poor falls can block high-level drainage where the cause is invisible from the ground.

An overflowing gutter is easy to notice in heavy rain. The cause is often harder to see. On Scottish roofs, the blockage may sit in a valley, behind a chimney, at a flat-roof outlet or inside a high gutter that cannot be inspected safely from a ladder.

Why drainage defects matter

Roof drainage is designed to move a large volume of water away quickly. When one route blocks, water backs up beneath coverings, spills against masonry or repeatedly soaks fascia boards. The first indoor sign may appear a long way from the original obstruction.

What can block or weaken the system

  • Leaves, moss and wind-blown debris
  • Fragments from cracked slate, tile or mortar
  • Sagging gutters that hold standing water
  • Loose joints, damaged brackets and separated downpipes
  • Blocked valleys and flat-roof outlets
  • Vegetation growing behind parapets or chimney stacks

Why a ground-level glance is not enough

Binoculars may show the front gutter, but they rarely reveal rear valleys, dormer channels or the upper side of a tenement roof. Aerial photographs record these areas directly and make it easier to distinguish a simple cleaning job from damaged components that need repair.

Check first, then brief the right contractor

AyeInspect does not clear gutters or carry out repairs. We provide independent photographic evidence, with visible defects circled and graded, so you can decide what work is needed and seek a fair quote from your chosen contractor.

If water is entering near electrical fittings, causing a ceiling to bulge or creating another immediate hazard, contact an appropriate emergency professional rather than waiting for a routine survey.
